A Green Club meeting was held on January 20th and there was a lot to talk about! To start off we welcomed our new green club member, Aaron from the 7th grade. He is now our photographer for the Green Club also. (Pictures will be posted soon). Mrs. Fuller attended our meeting to discuss the lunch tray issue. We talked about ordering different Styrofoam lunch trays. The trays are biodegradable but cost ten cents each. The trays that we have now are only two cents. We talked about maybe calling Dave’s Bar Grill to ask if they could send reusable lunch trays. If the trays are purchased they may not be available till next year. We are hopeful that one of these options will be implemented next year.
We brought up the subject of our blue recycling bins. (The dress down for a dollar is on January 26th). Once we purchase the recycling bins we can bring our recyclable bottles and cans from the cafeteria to the classroom bins, and then to Mrs. Dunlap’s car for her to bring them home so she can recycle them.
Our president Becca, talked about how long items take to disintegrate. Glad plastic bags take at least 20 years to disintegrate. The Green Club decided to make posters to put up around the school talking about how bad these bags are for our environment. She also suggested that we could make recycled notebooks, using recycled paper by cutting paper into small pieces and using a string to tie them all together. This would be a great idea for arts and craft.
At previous meetings, we talked about treasures from trash. We thought about it and said that we should start to collect clean trash to show a model of what to do, so that all St. Rose students can create treasures in April. Andrew also suggested that the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders could bird watch during recess, and record the numbers and types of birds seen.
Sincerely, Your Secretary,
Kiah M.
